WILLIAM MCKINLAY

On a quiet evening about 10 years ago I picked up a pencil and started sketching items around the house; an old teddy bear, a ceramic Arctic Skua, a woven basket. Soon I had looked out some old acrylic paints and was painting a vase of flowers. Not disillusioned, I took up a new hobby. With most of my hobbies, I buy all the stuff, get qualified (if there are qualifications to be had), get not bad at it, and then forget all about it. That time may yet come with art, but although I’ve bought all the acrylics, watercolours and pastels and given up, I’m still hooked on oils, and although I’ve tried all sorts of subjects, portraits are my thing at the moment.

I’m also spending a lot of time on the Alloway Railway Tunnel ART project, which will be one of the biggest murals in the UK; a community endeavour to create a magnificent work of art.
