CLAIRE DORRIS

I am a self-taught artist living in Troon on the west coast of Scotland. By day I am a full-time graphic designer with a growing family and Iā€™m currently President of Troon Art Club. I paint when I have natural gaps in my routines and when it feels inspired. Recently I have tackled some portraiture, which has been wonderful to explore.

My three favourite ingredients in creating my art are colour, mark making and texture. I enjoy using scrapers, silicon tools, palette knives or anything that creates different marks on paint. I love to mix different mediums with acrylics, oils, wax, oil pastels, pencils, gold leaf and textured medium
mixes. Everything is worth investigating.

My painting technique is intuitive, visceral and flows from the heart. Often, I bravely start with a blank canvas, having no preconceived plan other than a loose colour palette and I simply go for it! I am often inspired by locations I visit for example, 'Borve Mash Up', was created after a visit to the Isle of Lewis and reflects the localised colours of nature. The rugged Hebridean coastline at Borve Beach is wild and windy, with large colourful seaweed-covered boulders scattered randomly over the beach.

Sketchbooks are very much part of my creative process where I can offload quick mental images and thoughts.
